Scaling & Root Planing

When bacteria attack the gums, it causes plaque and tartar to accumulate and spread beneath the gumline, eventually reaching the bone. To avoid potential bone and tooth loss, Dr. Thore uses scaling and root planing or “deep cleaning.” She’ll first remove any built-up plaque and tartar from your teeth and gums with a process known as scaling. Then, she’ll move to root planing, which requires reshaping and smoothing the roots to make it harder for bacteria to adhere in the future.

Antibiotic Treatment

The special instruments used to target plaque and tartar are effective, but they may be unable to reach the smaller pockets of bacteria that can remain deep within the gum tissue. To address this problem, Dr. Thore will provide antibiotic treatment for gum disease, which involves applying medicine to the affected areas. Over several weeks, it will disperse and begin to kill any remaining bacteria. Additionally, the troublesome pockets will become smaller, and your gums will begin to heal.
